PROPANE SAFETY INFORMATION AND ADVICE

WHAT DOES PROPANE SMELL LIKE?

Propane is naturally odorless and colorless. For safety, an odorant called ethyl mercaptan is added to propane to give it a strong and recognizable smell.

This distinctive odor serves as an important warning and can help alert you to a potential propane leak.

If you smell propane or suspect a gas leak, act immediately

I SMELL PROPANE GAS. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Extinguish Flames and Avoid Sparks

Do not light matches, smoke, or create any flame. Do not operate electrical switches, appliances, phones, or anything else that could create a spark in the affected area.

Leave the Area Immediately

Get everyone out of the home, building, or area where you suspect the leak.

Shut Off the Gas — If It Is Safe to Do So

If you can safely reach your propane tank and know how to operate the main gas supply valve, turn the valve clockwise (to the right) to shut off the propane supply.

Report the Leak

Once you are a safe distance away, call 911 or your local fire department, then contact Horizon for assistance.

Do Not Return

Do not return to the building or affected area until emergency responders or a qualified propane service professional determines that it is safe.
